Habitat: rich, marple-basswood forest; On valley floor and lower half of steep, 220 foot, north-facing slope. Deep, dark, moist silt-loam. Canopy dominated by mature Acer saccharum, Tilia americana & Quercus rubra. Understory of sparse Carpinus caroliniana & Acer saccharum. Associates include Isopyrum biternatum, Hepatica acutiloba, Dentaria laciniata, Dicentra cucullaria, D. canadensis, Erythronium americanum, E. albidum, Carex woodii, C. hirtifolia, C. careyana, C. albursina, C. jamesii.
