Open understory ... on raised substrate areas around tree bases, along decaying old boles, and other types of peaty hummocks. In needle duff and carpets of Bryales mosses (none in Sphagnum spp.) ... Associated species include Carex leptalea, C. disperma, C. paupercula, C. aurea, C. interior, Platanthera aquilonis, Liparis loeselii, Corallorhiza trifida, Rubus pubesces, Viola incognita, Pyrola asarifolia, Saxifraga pennsylvanica, Rhamnus alnifolia, Lonicera villosa, Ribes hirtellum, Toxicodendron rydbergii.
