Habitat: on upper edge of talus, and on ledges of bedrock bulges at bae of 30+ meter high, 1 km long basalt cliff. East-facing ... Dry and very exposed conditions, just above shrub-dominated band at top of talus. Associated with Prunus pensylvanica, Rubus strigosus, Corylus cornuta, Acer spicatum, Betula papyrifera, Arabis holboellii, Aquilegia canadensis, Campanula rotundifolia, Dryopteris fragrans, Ribes lacustre, Potentilla sp., Woodsia ilvensis, Aralia nudicaulis, Artemesia [sic] sp.
