In a brushy grown-up area cleared from low rich woods in about 1935. Rich humus, damp, sunny.
Growing with Lilium michiganense, Dryopteris Thelypteris var. pubescens and Eupatorium maculatum.
This variety was observed in this area soon after it was cleared and I think the plants were undoubtedly in the original woods. At that time the plants were no doubt var. rubellum.
