Habitat: Gently-rolling sandy outwash plain ... outer margins of swamp where the patchy to interrupted canopy is co-dominated by Larix laricina and Fraxinus nigra, with occasional Betula papyrifera. Understory of Fraxinus nigra, Alnus incana, Abies balsamea, and Ulmus americana ... mesic (drier) peat hummocks. Additional associates include Carex aurea, C. leptalea, C. hysteracina, Glyceria striata, Mitella nuda, Rubus pubescens, Cypripedium reginae, Platanthera aquilonis, Circaea alpina, Caltha palustris, Pyrola secunda, Linnaea borealis, Galium asprellum, Thelypteris palustris, Rhamnus alnifolia, Parthenocissus inserta, and Picea glauca seedlings.
