Habitat: lower portion of very steep, 90-foot, south-facing slope in strongly-rolling forested terrain ... Canopy here of large, open-grown Quercus rubra & Q. macrocarpa, and smaller forest-grown Q rubra, Q. macrocarpa, and Tilia americana. Understory of Ostrya virginiana, Corylus cornuta, and Cornus racemosa. Rocky sandy-loam. Associates include Toxicodendron rydbergii, Diervilla lonicera, Amelanchier sp., Helianthus strumosus, Carex pensylvanica, Aster macrophyllus ... Slightly more sunlight here than surrounding forest floor receives.
