Habitat: in wet-mesic to mesic prairie. Moist, uncompacted black loam. In full sun. Associates include Spartina pectinata, Sorghastrum nutans, Andropogon gerardii, Bromus kalmii, Sporobolus heterolepis, Lysimachia quadriflora, Pycnanthemum virginianum, Liatris pycnostachya, L. kigulistylis, Thalictrum dasycarpum, Lathyrus palustris, Smilacina stellata, Solidago riddellii, S. canadensis var. gilvocanescens, Zizia aurea, Z. aptera, Cirsium muticum, Aster umbellatus, A. oolentangiensis, Prenanthes racemosa.
