Habitat: on valley floor. Open canopied lowland hardwood forest recovering from past grazing. In deep, rich, alluvial silt. Associated species include Crataegus calpodendron, Ulmus thomasii, Ribes missouriense, Acer nigrum, Prunus virginiana, Rubus occidentalis, Laportea canadensis, Urtica dioica, Galium aparine, Podophyllum peltatum, Hydrophyllum virginianum, Isopyrum biternatum, Rudbeckia laciniata, Allium tricoccum.
Description: Frequent. Trees 2-6 meters tall and to 8 cm dbh with compound thorns on trunk.
