In a bottom land forest on an inactive floodplain. In mesic sandy alluvium, often shallow over granite bedrock. Associated with Quercus macrocarpa, Ulmus americana, U. thomasii, Gymnocladus dioicus, Staphylea trifolia.
A few scattered canopy trees, but not abundant here.
