In full sun to partial shade of Betula papyrifera, Alnus incana, and Acer spicatum. Associates include Glyceria striata, Scirpus atrovirens, Juncus brevicaudatus, Poa palustris, Salix bebbiana, Thelypteris phegopteris, Equisetum arvense, Geum aleppicum var. strictum, Athyrium angustum.
