Habitat: in narrow strip of mesic hardwood forest on low terrace ~6-10 feet above east side of the river. Canopy of Tilia americana, Ulmus americana, Fraxinus nigra, Populus tremuloides, and Quercus macrocarpa. Patchy understory of Ostrya virginiana, Fraxinus nigra, F. pennsylvanica, and scattered Abies balsamea. Dark silty soil. Associates include Carex pedunculata, Brachyelytrum erectum, Caulophyllum thalictroides, Uvularia grandiflora, Phryma leptostachya, Athyrium angustum, Circaea lutetiana, Asarum canadense, Aster macrophyllus, A. lateriflorus, Hepatica americana.
