Habitat: in broad ecotonal area between large tamarack swamp and upland deciduous forest. Canopy dominated by Pinus strobus, Picea mariana, and Larix laricina. Understory of Acer spicatum & Alnus incana. In moist peat and mineral soil. Associates include Rubus pubescens, Rhamnus alnifolia, Cornus canadensis, Mitella nuda, Coptis trifolia, Trientalis borealis, Clintonia borealis, Moneses uniflora.
