Habitat: In small, dry prairie remnants in unquarried areas of old gravel pit. On moderately steep slopes and level areas in rolling terrain. Full sun. Gravelly sand. Associates include Schizachrium scoparium, Andropogon gerardii, Bouteloua curtipendula, Sporobolus heterolepis, Poa compressa, Solidago nemoralis, S. regida, S. speciosa, Anemone patens, Allium stellatum, Echinacea angustifolia, Liatris aspera, Aster oolentangliensis, Hedeoma hispida, Petalostemum purpureum, Amorpha canescens.
