Habitat: Uncommon on narrow ledges of 20 to 80-foot high x 1/2-mile long north-facing diorite cliff. On fairly dry, mossy ledges. Shaded by surrounding forest, and trees and shrubs on the cliff itself including picea glauca, Thuja occidentalis, Betula papyrifera, Acer spicatum, Sorbus decora, and Alnus viridis ssp crispa. Associates include Woodsia ilvensis, Thelypteris phegopteris, Cystopteris fragilis, Polypodium virginianum, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Huperzia X buttersii, Dryopteris fragrans, Arenaria macraphylla, Aquilegia canadensis.
