Habitat: in dry pine forest atop steep, 30 foot, west-facing slope on riverbank. Canopy of Pinus resinosa and P. banksiana. Associates include Carex pensylvanica, Danthonia spicata, Festuca ovina, Chimaphila umbellata, Galium boreale, Helianthemum bicknellii. Also frequent downstream in thick moss-covered moist, sandy soil under Pinus resinosa atop rather steep, north-facing, 20 foot slope on river bank. Here associated with Maianthemum canadense.
