Habitat: old field especially along fence rows and on woodland edges. Sandy soil of river terrace. Full sun to partial shade of Quercus macrocarpa, Juniperus virginiana, Acer negundo. Associated species include Rubus strigosus, Vitis riparia, Parthenocissus inserta, Poa pratensis, Andropogon gerardii, Phleum pratense, Achillea millefolium, Asclepias syriaca, Solidago gigantea, S. canadensis, S. nemoralis, Teucrium canadense.
