Habitat: In rolling terrain...on margin of dry woodland dominated by Quercus macrocarpa, Pinus banksiana, and Betula papyrifera, with occasional Pinus resinosa. Full sun to partial shade. Sandy soil. Associates include Toxicodendron rydbergii, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Quercus ellipsoidalis, Artemisia campestris, Helianthemum bicknellii, Achillea millefolium, Selaginella rupestris, Lithospermum canescens, Centaurea biebersteinii, Poa compressa, Dichanthelium linearifolium, D. perlongum, Stipa spartea, Carex pensylvanica, C. siccata.
