Habitat: on higher areas of floodplain dissected by old oxbows. Disturbed (heavily past grazed) floodplain forest. Canopy dominated by Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Tilia americana & Populus tremuloides, with occasional Juglans cinerea & Juniperus virginiana. Black silty-loam. Beneath dense cover of Matteuccia struthiopteris. Additional associates include Carex peckii, C. sprengellii, C. hirtifolia, Hydrophyllum virginianum, Trillium cernuum, Equisetum arvense, Phlox divaricata, Cryptotaenia canadensis, Rhamnus catharthica.
