Habitat: Level terrain ... dry woodland with patchy canopy dominated by Pinus banksiana, with scattered Quercus macrocarpa and Populus tremuloides. Understory patchy to dense, dominated by Corylus americana, C. cornuta, and Salix humilis. Occurring mostly in small canopy gaps. Sandy soil. Associates include Galium boreale, Maianthemum canadense, Schizachne purpurascens, Carex pensylvanica, Oryzopsis asperifolia, Toxicodendron rydbergii, Prunus pensylvanica, Rosa acicularis, Symphoricarpos occidentalis, Vaccinium angustifolium.
