Habitat: In floodplain forest on the inside (south side) of large river bend. Patchy to interrupted canopy, variously dominated by Acer saccharinum, Quercus macrocarpa, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, and Tilia americana, with occasional Acer negundo. Open understory, patchy shrub layer of Zanthoxylum americanum and Ribes cynosbati. Grazed in past. Alluvial silty-sand. Full to partial shade. Associates include Carex radiata, C. sprengelii, C. assiniboinensis, C. stipata, Laportea canadensis, Galium aparine, Phalaris arundinacea, Rudbeckia laciniata, Matteuccia struthiopteris, Onoclea sensibilis.
