Habitat: Rugged terrain along the [river]...along small ravine under patchy canopy, locally composed of Betula papyrifera & B. allegheniensis. Understory of Acer spicatum, A. saccharum, and Sambucus racemosa. Moist, rocky soil on fairly level ground between the river and steep, east-facing slope of 200-foot ridge. Associates include Athyrium angustum, Rubus strigosus, Viola pubescens, Carex intumescens, Aquilegia canadensis, Actaea rubra, Mertensia paniculata.
