Extremely rugged terrain ... uppermost portion of extremely steep, 320-foot, southeast-facing slope and onto narrow ridgetop above the Caribou River valley southeast of Paccini Lake. Occasional to common in canopy with Acer saccharum, A. rubrum, and Betula papyrifera. Understory of A. saccharum. Rocky, loamy soil, rather shallow to bedrock. Associates include Carex peckii, C. communis, C. deweyana, C. peduncularta, C. gracilescens, Oryzopsis asperifolia, Milium effusum, Viola pubescens, Polygonatum pubescens, Streptopus roseus ... Also open-grown trees on dry, sunny diabase outcrops in vicinity.
