Habitat: rich, mature bottomland forest on broad terrace just above normal flood level on long, gradually-sloping, river-bend peninsula. Canopy dominated by Tilia americana, Quercus macrocarpa, Celtis occidentalis, and Acer saccharum. Understory of Ostrya virginiana, Carya cordiformis, Celtis occidentalis, and Ulmus americana. Dark silty soil. Associates include Laportea canadensis, Carex sprengelii, C. hirtifolia, Diarrhena obovata, Caulophyllum thalictroides, Hydrophyllum virginianum, Matteuccia struthiopteris, Parthenocissus inserta.
