Habitat: in rather thin soil atop granite outcrop. In small canopy opening on oak woods. In partial shade of young Quercus macrocarpa, Tilia americana & Graxinus pennsylvanica. Associates include Prunus americana, P. virginiana, Corylus americana. Ostrya virginiana, Toxicodendron rydbergii, Amphicarpaea bracteata, Elymus hystrix, Orysopsis asperifolia, Galium boreale, Poa pratensis, Veronicastrun virginicum. Dark, loamy soil.
Description: Several small, <3 tall shrubs. Stems < 3cm basal diameter. No compound thorns observed.
