Habitat: Mineral soil of microhabitat more mesic and due to ~1m width of trail clearing, more open than surrounding mesic mixed forest. Associates: Apocynum androsaemifolium, Eurybia macrophylla, Glyceria striata, Clintonia borealis, Diervilla lonicera, Acer spicata, Pteridium aquilinum, Calamagrostis canadensis, Epilobium angustifolium, Acer rubrum.
Description: Occasional individuals and small groups. Up to 2 m tall.
