Habitat: In sandy soil and moderately deep shade. In a dry-mesic deciduous forest dominated by oak and aspen. In sandy soil and moderately deep shade. Associated with Quercus macrocarpa, Q. ellipsoidalis, Populus tremuloides, Zanthoxylum americanum, Corylus americana.
Description: A small understory tree with 8 stems from one root crown. The largest stem 9 m tall, 11 cm dbh. Bark gray, thin, smooth.
