Habitat: Local on riverbank terrace. In partial shade of Pinus banksiana, P. resinosa, Populus grandidentata, P. tremuloides, and Quercus macrocarpa at the edge of dry open woodland (along an old field clearing). Forming small carpets in fine sandy soil. Associated species include Poa pratensis, Andropogon gerardii, Dichanthelium leibergii, Carex siccata, Achillea millefolium, Hedyotis longifolia, Phlox pilosa, Lithospermum canescens, Galium boreale, Symphoricarpos albus.
