Locally abundant, forming dense carpets on sand bar exposed by low water flow. Full sun. Rhizomatous. Associated species include Zizania palustris, Eleocharis intermedia, Scirpus validus, Heteranthera dubia, Mimulus ringens, Lindernia dubia, Sagittaria cuneata, Salix exigua.
