Habitat: Gently rolling outwash plain. In dry jack pine woodland. Patchy canopy of Pinus banksiana, with rare P. resinosa. Open understory. Partial shade. Deep sandy soil. In thick carpets of Pleurozium schreberi. Associates include Lithospermum caroliniense, Melampyrum lineare, Galium boreale, Campanula rotundifolia, Thalictrum venulosum, Maianthemum canadense, Aster laevis, Gaultheria procumbens, Vaccinium angustifolium, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Oryzopsis pungens, Koeleria macrant
