Habitat: Occasional in wet sand and shallow to quite deep wet muck. Stranded on fairly broad and gradually sloping lower beach zone, up to ~4 inches above present lake level (down considerably due to extended drought). Full sun. Stems frequently cropped (by geese). Associates include Eleocharis acicularis, Fimbristylis autumnalis, Schoenoplectus purshianus, Juncus pelocarpus, Hypericum majus, H. boreale, Persicaria lapathifolia, P. punctata, Lycopus americanus, Bidens connata, B. cernua, Utricularia gibba, Nymphaea
