Habitat: On sandy outwash plain. Occasional in old field dominated by Agropyron repens. Dry sandy soil. Full sun. Sometimes in loose clumps. Phenology of this species is slightly behind that of Cyperus houghtonii which is an occasional associate here as well. Additional associated species include Cyperus lupulinus, Agrostis scabra, Dichanthelium sp., Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Hedeoma hispida, Potentilla argentea, Conyza canadensis, Verbascum thapsus, Berteroa incana, Artemisia ludoviciana.
