Habitat: Occasional locally on riverbank terrace. In partial shade of Pinus banksiana, P. resinosa, Populus grandidentata, P. tremuloides, and Quercus macrocarpa at the edge of dry open woodland (along an old field clearing). Loose clumps in fine sandy soil. Associated species include Poa pratensis, Andropogon gerardii, Carex siccata, Antennaria howellii ssp. petaloidea, Achillea millefolium, Hedyotis longifolia, Phlox pilosa, Lithospermum canescens, Galium boreale, Symphoricarpos albus.
