Habitat: Rare and local in hardwood forest. Small dense patch in transitional area on gentle, south-facing, 20-foot slope of terrace; between dry woodland atop terrace and alluvial forest on floodplain. Canopy of Populus tremuloides, Quercus macrocarpa, and Tilia americana. Understory of Ostrya virginiana, Fraxinus nigra, and Corylus cornuta. Sandy silt over sand. Abundant earthworms.
