Habitat: Local, several large patches along roadway through a dry oak woodland. Partial shade of Quercus macrocarpa and Q. ellipsoidalis. Sandy soil of an ancient (glacial) river terrace, near granite outcrops. Associated species include Andropogon gerardii, Stipa spartea, Bromus inermis, Poa pratensis, Carex pensylvanica, C. siccata, Desmodium canadense, Veronicastrum virginicum, Monarda fistulosa, Toxicodendron rydbergii, Corylus americana.
