Habitat: Occasional to frequent locally on quite steep northwest-facing slope of 15- to 20-foot high sandy terrace which rises above the floodplain. Narrow strip of mesic hardwood forest on the slope (dry pine-oak woodland atop terrace). Shaded beneath Tilia americana, Quercus macrocarpa, and Ostrya virginiana. Dark sandy soil. Associates include Carex deweyana, C. sprengelii, C. backii, C. radiata, Aquilegia canadensis, Erigeron philadelphicus, Laportea canadensis, Solidago flexicaulis, Athyrium angustum, Polygonat
