Habitat: Large peatland complex; in cedar swamp which forms a fairly narrow zone between tamarack swamp and the upland. Interrupted canopy dominated by Thuja occidentalis, with scattered Abies balsamea. Scattered Alnus incana in understory. Moist peat, carpeted by Sphagnum spp. and feathermosses.
Associated Species: Carex leptalea, Mitella nuda, Cornus canadensis, Coptis groenlandicum, Thelypteris palustris, Osmunda cinnamomea, Rubus pubescens, Ribes americana, Rhamnus alnifolia, Toxicodendron rydbergii.
Description: Erect to rather sprawling shrubs, to 40 inches tall.
