Habitat: Uncommon and local on quite steep northwest-facing slope of 15- to 20-foot high sandy terrace which rises above the floodplain. Narrow strip of mesic hardwood forest on the slope (dry pine-oak woodland atop terrace). Shaded beneath Tilia americana, Quercus macrocarpa, and Ostrya virginiana. Scattered clumps along ~100 yards of lower slope. Dark sandy soil. Associated species include Carex deweyana, C. sprengelii, C. blanda, C. grisea, Aquilegia canadensis, Athyrium angustum, Polygonatum pubescens, Viola ca
