Habitat: Rolling forested drumlin plain. Frequent in poor black spruce swamp in shallow, ~35-acre basin. Canopy dominated by fairly dense and rather even-aged Picea mariana, with occasional Larix laricina. Partial to full shade. In continuous carpets of Sphagnum spp. and Polytrichum sp. mosses. Forming small to quite large, loose to dense patches, often on hummocks. Deep saturated peat. Associated species include Eriophorum spissum, Carex paupercula, Smilacina trifolia, Cypripedium acaule, Vaccinium oxycoccus, Chama
