Habitat: Sandy outwash plain. Local on outer margin (near surrounding upland) of rich shrub fen and tamarack swamp. Full sun to partial shade of Alnus incana. Sparse patch of several dozen plants in narrow zone dominated by Calamagrostis canadensis and Carex stricta. Saturated peat over sand. Additional associates include Carex prairea, Campanula aparinoides, Impatiens capensis, Cicuta bulbifera, Aster puniceus, Lysimachia thyrsiflora, Thelypteris palustris, Caltha palustris.
