Habitat: On mid slope of extremely steep, east- to northeast-facing slope of 40-foot riverbank terrace. Patchy canopy of Tilia americana and Quercus macrocarpa. Quite dense understory of Tilia americana, Rhamnus cathartica, Lonicera x bella, Amelanchier sp., and Ulmus americana. Rooted in moss mats 10 to 40 feet upslope from granite outcrops. Dark sandy soil. Additional associates include Aquilegia canadensis, Polypodium virginianum, Galium boreale, Taraxacum officinale, Eupatororium rugosum, Leonurus cardiaca, Prunus virginiana.
