Habitat: Rolling forested drumlin plain. Uncommon in native pine-hardwood forest. Interrupted canopy dominated by Pinus strobus, with occasional Populus tremuloides and Pinus resinosa. Patchy to dense understory of Populus tremuloides and Zanthoxylum americanum, with scattered Corylus cornuta, Ostrya virginiana, and Carpinus caroliniana. Rich sandy loam. Level to gently sloping mesic settings. Associates include Carex pensylvanica, C. deweyana, Luzula acuminata, Athyrium angustum, Pteridium aquilinum, Viola pubescen
