Habitat: Rolling forested moraine. Local in mesic hardwood forest on 15-acre island in large peatland complex. Canopy of Tilia americana, Acer saccharum, and A. rubrum, with scattered Populus tremuloides and Betula papyrifera. Patchy understory of Acer saccharum and Ostrya virginiana. Level to gently-sloping areas. Loamy soil. Low shrubs, to ~30 inches tall. Additional associates include Carex pensylvanica, C. pedunculata, C. assiniboinensis, Luzula acuminata, Schizachne purpurascens, Viola pubescens, Asarum canade
