Habitat: In strongly rolling forested moraine. Common. On sand and cobble beach and in shallow water (<12 inches deep) on wave-washed shoreline. Plants in water lacking inflorescences. Full sun. Associated species include Cyperus strigosus, C. squarrosus, C. bipartitus, Eleocharis acicularis, E. palustris, Carex viridula, Lipocarpha micrantha, Dichanthelium acuminatum, Agrostis scabra, Agalinus paupercula, Ranunculus flammula, Conyza canadensis, Lobelia kalmii, Bidens cernua, B. tripartita, Isoetes echinospora.
