Habitat: in large canopy gap (old pasture opening) in alluvial forest. Full sun to partial shade of Quercus macrocarpa, Tilia americana, and Pinus banksiana. Silty sand on low river bend terrace. Associated species include Achillea millefolium, Asclepias syriaca, Stachys palustris, Zizia aurea, Veronicastrum virginicum, Anemone canadensis, Phleum pratense, Poa pratensis, P. palustris, Andropogon gerardii, Sorghastrum nutans, Agrostis alba, Toxicodendron rydbergii, and seedlings of Fraxinus nigra.
