Habitat:
Rolling forested terrain; in rich conifer swamp. Scattered loose patches in transitional zone between cedar on slight slope and tamarack on level ground. Canopy dominated here by large Thuja occidentalis, with scattered Abies balsamea, Picea mariana, Larix laricina, Ulmus americana, and Betula papyrifera. Saturated organic substrate.
Associated Species:
Rhamnus alnifolia, Mitella nuda, Rubus pubescens, Cystopteris bulbifera, Saxifraga pennsylvanica, Carex gynocrates, C. peckii, Glyceria striata.

Heavily browsed shrubs; to ~3 feet tall.
