Habitat: Rolling forested drumlin plain. Frequent along outer edge of black ash swamp (wet-mesic ecotone to the upland). In partial to full shade of large Fraxinus nigra in the swamp and young Quercus macrocarpa, Acer rubrum, and Prunus virginiana on adjacent upland. Wet mucky substrate. Forms fairly large, dense clumps. Associated species include Carex lacustris, C. radiata, C. gracillima, C. intumescens, Glyceria striata, Equisetum sylvaticum, Onoclea sensibilis, Eupatorium perfoliatum, Aster puniceus, Ribes hirte
