Habitat: Infrequent and local on quite steep northwest-facing slope of 15- to 20-foot high sandy terrace which rises above the floodplain. Narrow strip of mesic hardwood forest on the slope (dry pine-oak woodland atop terrace). Full to partial shade beneath Tilia americana, Quercus macrocarpa, and Ostrya virginiana. On lower half of slope in dark sandy soil. Ray flowers pinkish-purple. Associates include Carex deweyana C. backii, C. blanda, C. radiata, C. sprengelii, Aquilegia canadensis, Athyrium angustum, Solidago
