Habitat: Strongly-rolling forested terrain. Local, forming loose patches in ash swamp dominated by Fraxinus nigra, with scattered Betula papyrifera and B. allegheniensis. Understory of Abies balsamea, Acer spicatum, and Fraxinus nigra. Moist shallow organics over sandy-loam. Additional associates: Osmunda cinnamomea, Dryopteris carthusiana, D. cristata, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Mitella nuda, Asarum canadense, Circaea alpina, Rubus pubescens, Thalictrum dioicum, Aralia nudicaulis, Arisaema triphyllum, Cicuta maculata
