Growing in partial shade in outcrop areas of pine woodland and outcrop mosaic on stpee upper slope.Associates: Agrostis scabra, Piptatherum pungens, Danthonia spicata, Maianthemum canadense, Viola aduna, Melampyrum lineare, Oryzopsis asperifloia, Antennaria sp., Carex sp ., Cordalis sempervirens, Anemone quinquefolia, Silene antirrhina, Solidago sp., Woodsia ilvensis, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Diervilla lonicera, Potentilla arguta, Potentilla norvegica.
