Habitat: On SE-facing aspect of large gabbroic bedrock-controlled ridge. Growing in partial shade in outcrop areas of pine woodland and outcrop mosaic on steep upper slope. Associates: Agrostis scabra, Piptatherum pungens, Dicanthelium xanthophysum, Danthonia spicata, Maianthemum canadense, Viola adunca, Melampyrum lineare, Oryzopsis asperifloia, Antennaria sp., Carex sp., Corydalis sempervirens, Anemone quinquefolia, Silene antirrhina, Solidago sp., Woodsia ilvensis, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Diervilla lonicera, Potentilla norvegica.
